South Oaks Hospital rn, miller, kimberly ann

My experience from day one has been an absolute horror story because everyone, staff members give you different information (they are not on the same page or maybe they don't realize that they are all work at the same facility) or no information because of the type of facility that they are — psycological/behavioral.
Tonight kimberly miller, rn was the epitome of it all. I went to visit me son and as usually I dropped the bag off with some personal item for him (hair shampoo & conditioner, deodorant. Etc.) with a staff memberat the nurse station first. The only things lefted in my possession were my glasses and a small open mesh coin purse.
My son suffer from seasonal allergies and he had a stuffy runny nose so he got up from several times from the table to go to his room to get a tissue to blow his nose with. He actually went to his room to get the disposable wipes (like diaper wipes) that I purchased for him and brought to him on saturday 6/15/19 which the staff checked in.
Well ms. Kimberly came running over to where we were sitting and accused me of giving the wipes to him just then.in an angry authoritative voice she stating "he can't have this (the wipes) you have to give it to us first to be checked in" my reply was "I didn't give them to him he had them — I brought them to him last week" then she questioning me as to who gave them to him — now i"m annoyed and I said angrily"I guess one of your staff members". Kimberly then proceeded to the hallway on the right of the nurses station (by the elevator). I later found out that it was unit manager brandon (a short 5'6" bald headed black man maybe in his forties) office. He came near the nurses station and kimberly indiscreetly pointed us out the manager. Yes I watched kimberly's every move because she left us with such an attitude. Then the unit manager and kimberly went to his office — when kimberly came back to the nurses station she had her back to us I guess talking to the other staff because now they're staring towards us (and I have no psy issues but I have worked in the health feild for 20 yrs I know the nonsense)- I guess to put us under survellance — especially my son because every time he got up to go to his room for a tissue he was followed a few seconds later a staff member would go into his room behind him — you have a staff member sitting there watching all the visitors ask him if he saw me give anything to my son — thank you for the cruel treatment I encountered from all your staff including the unit manager on tonight 6/17/19 initiated by kimberly miller, rn — nurse manager said she admitted that she assuming that I had just given my son the wipes tonight — asked for an apology received "nothing"!

South Oaks Hospital unfair treatment

My name is Donna Lafleur, I live in Portsmouth, RI, my daughter Jessica M Bowley was a patient until this morning 6/10/19 when she was kicked out of the hospital because she claims her roommate is crazy and she (the roommate) was trying to get an orderly fired. Not sure what happened as my daughter was given her phone back but her battery was running out quickly and couldn't use it to tell me everything. What I did get was that Jessica was told she couldn't read in her room (that makes no sense) so she was in the bathroom. Because she was in the bathroom the roommate told the staff or someone that Jessica was doing drugs in the bathroom. Jessica called from the hospital phone one day last week 6/6/2019 complaining that the medication they had her on was causing her side effects like chest pain, tingling and pain in her left arm, swollen ankles and she felt like she was having a heart attack. I guess they did an EKG and then gave her some compression socks for the swelling but did not change the medication! What kind of place is this that does this? They didn't listen to her, but they listen to someone who is off in another world that my daughter is doing drugs in the bathroom! She has no phone or visitors so how can that happen? My daughter is no saint but she has been living on and off the streets for the last three years. She has a history of alcohol and drug abuse and a multitude of personal painful experiences with bad relationships and abuse. She has an 11 year old son that now lives with his father here in Portsmouth, RI and I see him regularly but this past October she gave birth to a son in a Long Island hospital and I am not sure what had transpired but I know she didn't have a place to live so the child was put into foster care. Jessica should have gone into treatment the day after but she didn't still trying to hang onto a bad relationship with the father that of course ended and left her back on the streets. Believe me I have spent tens of thousands of dollars trying to help her but you can only lead a horse to water, you can't make them drink it. She finally got into this hospital that she desperately needs treatment and two weeks later she is being tossed out like garbage because someone said something! How does that happen? She is trying to contact her lawyer and counselor but I have no idea because she isn't able to contact me. My daughter needs this treatment so that she can go into Morning Star and start her life over or she is going to die and there will be 2 kids with no mother! Please call me and tell me what is going on with her - she needs help! I am 60 years old and have a full time job at a Mortgage Company so I can't just get on plane and go to her. I did leave messages with her counselor Christina on 6/7/19 about the meds last week and no one got back to me. My cell phone is [protected]. thank you, Donna Lafleur

South Oaks Hospital se1

I'd like to take a minute to let Administration know what an amazing staff you have working for you.
I've been spending quite a bit of time visiting One of your patients and my dear friend Julius .
I've observed nothing but patients and compassion as far as the way the staff has been treating the patients. And the staff has also treated me and other visitors with nothing but respect 😊
I feel like I've made some friends with some of the staff and will probably stop by from time to time just to say hello to my new found friends after my friend is transferred to another facility.
Sincerely Johnny D.

South Oaks Hospital patient care

I can't tell you how upset I am with this place. I want my son to be transferred and have gotten no where. They don't even have an adequate number for Patient Advocacy there. My son has ADHD and other symptoms off the autistic spectrum. I went to Stony Brook at first and received the same treatment there. I wish that I knew more to go to Mather Hospital for his treatment.
I need help and they are treating me like I'm the idiot I have my son to have the best treatment and he is NOT getting it. I need HELP please. The social worker over at S. O. sounds like she is reading off a page in a book on how to talk to parents with concerns or something and NO action has been completed.

South Oaks Hospital patient treatment

My son was admittedto SO because he is Bi Polar and his meds needed to be adjusted, we went to Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson Ny Emergency room, he has been in Mather three time over the years and they were excellent. Mather did not have a bed so they took him to SO and what an absolute nightmare, someone should seriously investigate them I have never experienced anything like it. First my son also suffers from Ulcerated Colities and told them when he was admitted that he needed a special diet, they told him they would get him a dietician. 5 days later he still had not seen any dietician and he had not eaten for 5 days.
The unit he is on is horrific patients are allowed to do whatever they want, they throw chairs pull each others hair and the staff does absolutely nothing, nada, not a thing, one PA told a patient to go F himself. One guy in there attacked my son punched him in the eye so my son said he did not feel safe and wanted to go home. Nope can't go home but they will make sure the guy is watched, that very night he fires a chair at my son while I am there. What does the staff do ? asks my son and I to go into one room while they take care of him, when we come out of the room the guy is wandering around, in the mean times others are compalining about this guy, one young girl won't come out of her room because she is so afraid the staff just simply ignores them, it is a nightmare.

This place needs new staff. They are not sympathetic at all. They do not care for patients. They have patients who smell and they do not shower them. The patients rooms are a mess. They just do not care about patients. Patients go all day without eating. They do not even attempt to feed the patients.

Went to visit a family member on SE-2 this evening. South Oaks is not a hospital, it is a prison. Why would a mental health institution degrade patients by corralling them & their visitors into a small room, then sitting several feet away & staring/glaring at them for an hour as if they have committed some heinous crime? It was impossible to hear one another due to the noise level & not enough seats. I'm sure the doctors & nurses lounge has plenty of comfortable couches and chairs. Made the mistake of bringing a book; they used gloves & checked every page to ensure that we were not smuggling things into the ward. When visiting hours were over, we were yelled at to leave, then let out, but they wouldn't open the outside door until we went back and pleaded with "staff, " some of the nastiest, rudest workers I have ever had the misfortune to encounter. If you don't have a serious mental illness and you are just there to visit a loved one who does, trust me, you will question your sanity by the time you leave. Didn't think places like this could exist after Willowbrook was closed.

The place is filthy! Only one bathroom for 40 people and a patient who liked to urinate on the walls and floors. When you entered your feet would stick to the floor because it had it thick coat of dried urine. The washing machine for the unit was filled with black mildew and the stench was so bad that staff refused to enter the room. I addressed the issue with an administrator and showed her the machine. She sent a young woman from house cleaning to wipe out the black slime. But in order to really clean it it would have to have the basin removed. It was a superficial cleaning, sort of like a cover up, one of their specialties. But the administrator was so proud of herself when she told me of her solution. I was not impressed and thought why don't you just buy a new one, especially since the machine looked like an antique. After discharge I received a copy of my chart and found that the doctor had made numerous entries claiming he had seen me when he in fact he had not (insurance fraud). When i asked a nurse where the doctor was, annoyed because he was MIA. The response was bizarre "you have to understand it is very hard to find doctors willing to work here, and Dr. Quack has more patients then any other doctor". I thought nurses were supposed to be patient advocates, instead she was a doctor advocate. SHAME, SHAME, SHAME.

The hospital is okay. The RN's and the attendants on the Adult unit are amazing. The diversity of the population is not good. They have too many "thugs" mixed in with high functioning people who are there for medication adjustments. Plus, the staff is overworked. The head of the unit is not even a nurse! Not to mention she is rude and unprofessional. The place is outdated and the bathrooms are nasty. The food is okay. Like I said the best part of the hospital is the amazing staff which made my stay bearable. They really do care about people and they helped me so much when I was there.

Well so far I can say(after 2 days so far)that my son who is in the younger unit seems happy and the kids all there were very friendly as so is the staff! No one was yelling, screaming, fighting or anything! Again reading the above reviews does make me concerned however I will keep an eye out and my son tells me everything we are very honest with one another on that respect. He had no complaints except wanting to come home soon. I am not saying the above statements are false I have seen them at other hospital facilities. Just not here...YET! The doctor, nursing staff, caseworker and personnel were all very helpful and returned all my calls! I honestly have no bad things to say here. Again only been a couple of days but okay so far!

My son is 12 and he was admitted there becuase stonyBrook had no room for him.. He went in just for being depressed and having thoughts of sucide never went through with it just thoughts he came out a different kid.. Worse he is now angry aggressive saying horrible things about himself he was there for 1 week and in that week not one doctor therapist have kept in contact with me.. i was able to visit my son and he looked doped up and different. I am really going to look into doing something about this place. Then the best part was i called the hospital after he came out becuase of how he was acting becuase of course they changed his medication. the doctor said well i really can't do nothing have him commited i'm like really...what a shame

Totally agree with her statement. My son was admitted SE2 unit and its a nut house. My son had come home from college with stress issues from school, and we seeked help. He ended up at south oaks. This was the worst mistake of our lives. Staff treats everyone including parents like they have issues. They talk down to you and are annoyed when asked a question. They put people with every type of disorder together. There reason for this is that on the outside they must learn to cope with many types of people. This came from a doctor. This place needs to be investigated. Its a scam that does not treat. It holds people with insurance and drains the ins. and then hopefully lets you go to seek real help..My son went in with issues that many kids deal with. He was totally honest with us and got put into a situation that no young adult should ever see. He will be damaged in some way because of them the rest of his life. Please if anyone that has any type of pull for investigations, this place needs to be investigated. We are hitting dead ends because of the screwed up system we run in America. Its a shame.
