Vanilla Visa is a rip off. They have in larger letters on the front of the product "No Fees". They hand on the rack amids other no fee gift cards. Once you buy it, you are hit with a $4.95 fee. When you try to return it, in my case immediately, you are told it is not possible to back it out. In tiny letters on the front of the package, it advises of the $4.95 fee whereas "No Fees" is written in large letters with smaller letters saying "after Purchase". The design was made to rip off so you buy several smaller denominations only to give them more fees. $4.95 for a $20 card is usury. And they won't tell where they are really located because the clerk said they are afraid of retaliation! Ain't that something!

I have received several of these in the past, and it was like stumbling through an obstacle course trying to expend them. It took several unsuccessful attempts to use the cards, several phone calls to the card company’s customer service number (when I could ever get through), diligence, and lots of patience before my prepaid VISA “gift” cards were finally expended and even then, I as the customer had to dole out instructions to the store clerks regarding how to process them. If the purchaser is attempting to purchase something that costs more than the value on the gift card, the store clerk must calculate the cost difference in ADVANCE and collect the difference in cost from the customer BEFORE scanning the Visa gift card. If the store tries to scan the card FIRST (applying it against the total purchase price) and collect the cost difference from the customer second, the card will be declined. Despite the fact that store merchants who sell (and are supposed to accept) these cards have a written contract in place with VISA, supposedly instructing them on how to process these stupid things, most store clerks are clueless on how to go through this ridiculous exercise. Climbing Mount Everest is easier than trying to use one of these cards in a restaurant.
The companies who market these cards are counting on the fact that once purchased, most of the people who were “gifted” (more like stuck) with these cards will give up using them out of sheer frustration and that only adds to the profit the company has already made on the sale of the card itself. Additionally, the credit card issuers get to deduct ridiculous monthly fees from the value of the card when not redeemed over a certain length of time. It is better to gift either cash or a specific store gift card that can be applied toward purchases in a NORMAL fashion without having to go through the confusion and absurd nonsense that most of these VISA prepaid cards (as a whole) inflict on unsuspecting customers.

deceptive fees
The fine print is so small stating the fees charged 7 months after activation, that I could not read them w/my 20/20 eye sight. I ended up paying $17 in fees on a $25 gift card. The admin fee was $2.50 per month after activation and therefore, the use of Vanilla Visa is a complete ripoff.

BEWARE OF VANILLA PREPAID MASTERCARD
I purchased a $100.00 Vanilla Mastercard from 7 Eleven June 18, 2010. Payment was made through myBMO Mastercard credit card and a reciept was given for 100.00 and the activation fee of $5.95.
When trying to use the gift card I found out that it was not activated and was told to return to place of purchase. I went back to 7 Eleven and they said this was not their problem and stopped short of accusing me of stealing the card. (even though I have the receipt.) VAnilla mastercard did a investigation and stated that my reciept did not match the card issued and could not offer any further assistance. They said it was the fault of the 7 eleven clerk not properly activating the card. When I again contacted the 7 eleven they said it was not their problem and could not tell me why the receipt they gave me does not match the card purchased. At present I paid for a $100.00 gift and have the reciept that was given to me and I am out the total amount. This has infuriated me as I did nothing wrong and have been scammed out of $100.00. This is now more than having lost the money it is the principal of how there is no consumer protection in regards to these prepaid credit cards. I am sure that I am not the only one this has happened to. I am going to make it my mission to expose this issue, I am just looking for some advice on where to go from here. I have been a Mastercard customer for 25+ years and purchased this gift as it was affliated with Mastercard which I assumed was a reputable company. I also contacted my BMO Mastercard and informed them of this issue they could not reverse my payment as if was a gift card purchase. I informed them I was a loyal customer and would hate to have to close my account over this issue. The apoligized and assisted quite readily in closing my account. I guess keeping a loyal customer is not worth their trouble. It is such a shame what this world is coming to. Thank you
I was given a $100 card in it's original box. They said the card was declined without even being used. The Vanilla [censored]s said the only way they can refund is to open an investigation, and give them receipts. Who keeps gift card receipts? Also, no where in the purchase agreement does it state this needs to happen. This is fraud.
i just purchased a 50 dollar vanilla prepaid master card at mac's mart in sault ste marie ontario. The card was not activated by the store but i have my receipt. I could not get the card to work, I called customer service and advised that i must send in copies of my drivers liscence address. reciept. and then she will make a ticket and i must wait up 40 6 weeks to see if they will reimburse me. BRUTAL>>Do not buy these cards. Good luck getting your money back if the store didn't activate correctly.
On February 29th, 2016 I purchased a $25 Prepaid Vanilla Mastercard, and did some cleaning a week or so later. Didn't activate the card for a while because i didn't need it right away. Threw out the receipt thinking I probably won't need this. Now they tell me I need the receipt, my bank statement isn't enough even though it's for the exact same amount the prepaid costs and the exact date it was activated, they must have the activation date to see if i'm lying. Only alternative is to get a electronic funds Journal to prove to them I did buy it from the store. I will go down to the store and try to talk to the same cashier who activated it for me and see if he can help me at all. Although Now i have absolutely no confidence in their customer service, and refuse to ever buy one again. The representatives on the phone lay all the blame on you, I got a little upset for good reason because there is no other recourse available, and no failsafes in place to prevent exactly this type of thing from happening. It has been available for 5 years now and still they have no other alternatives to confirm it. Seems like they do that on purpose to run your money down with inactivation costs./
On Dec 18, 2015 I purchased $100 prepaid vanilla mastercard from Shopper drugs mart. And as usual with all the complains the card can't be activated. I called their CS (customer service) first they asked me to send email I sent several times and it never goes to them. I went back to Shopper Drugs mart the cashier which I made a purchased with her she called vanilla's CS by herself and then she call Front Manager to deal with me. Front Manager told me that she can't do anything and I have to deal with issue by myself. I kept calling vanilla's CS for 5 times each time repeat same thing same detail I wasted time with them like half day. They gave me their fax number and I faxed them and the transaction was ok!. I called CS again and he said that they received nothing. I talked to their supervisor she advised me to go back to Shopper Drugs to try to refund. I went back to Shopper Drugs and Front Manager refused to refund and she did call vanilla CS by herself and sent fax to them again and transaction was ok!. Of course nothing work I lost my $100 for a scammer.Vanilla is scam itself and either of Shopper Drugs Mart they should learn how to be professional to handle the issue. Since Front Manager called by herself and make sure that the card can't be activated they should just refund for customer with no excuse. I guess none is going to take an action, none is going to fix it. We all just victims for those retail business which lack of responsibility.
Today is July 1, 2015 I went to petro canada the guy gave the card himself activate it got home not working called vanilla said not activated went back to merchant same thing card activation not matching the bill out of 100 plus fee went to shoppers bought another 100 card bill everythng not working same thing again not activated wrong number on the receipt but in the back both card same serial number I told them maybe its a wrong batch this is ridiculous I am out of 200 plus 12 activation they create reference number get me to fax everything but treating me like I stole those card and they stated it cant be a wrong match taht doesnt happen it is ridiculous a company able to take money from people like that and getting away with it worszt part when I go to store and they swipe the card to activate it in front of me the number taht come out is not even the number on the card so I am not lying when I say I paid for this card something wrong with the batch of card erro happen computer do make mistake and these are process and done through a machine to produce a lot at a time no they dont make mistake
This company is horrible Vanilla Master card needs to be monitored properly. I have been waiting over 3 months for a replacement card. They told me that they sent it twice along time ago which was a lie. I paid for that card, and I paid fees and taxes that I dont get back. why are they getting away with this!
I recently purchased a $50.00 Vanilla MasterCard from a local Money Mart to pay for my data plan with Bell. I called Bell and they said the payment was declined. So I called MasterCard and they told me the card was improperly activated. I was surprised. Activating a credit card seems like a fairly simple, straightforward act. The clerk waves the bar code under the red scanner light and the register makes a beep sound and you pay them. How can anyone mess that up? Anyway, their telephone representative took my name, address and phone number and asked me to take a photograph of my drivers license and e mail it as an attachment in an e mail to their company and he would have the issue resolved within 3 business days. He even gave me a six digit number saying he had opened a file on the complaint. I immediately became suspicious of this request for my drivers license and did some online searching. I thought part of the reason people use these prepaid cards is for the ease of use, if not the anonymity they offer. So much for either of those features. I ended up doing as he asked, but not before taking a pair of scissors and black duct tape to cover over my DL number with black strips of tape. I covered my signature, my height and weight details, my photograph and my middle initial. In my province, Ontario, your date of birth is part of your actual license number. It's the last six digits, backwards. The person's full name is also written in very small letters along the left side of the front of the card. Covered that, too. It looks like a document straight out of the PMO's office, redacted to Hell. Now I'm waiting for a response from their Florida office.
I agree to all complaints! My employer gave me a $200 vanilla mastercard as a commission. I did not use it right away. Few days later, I decided to use it in a buffet restaurant but I was surprised that it was declined! So I called the customer service and was advised that I need to provide them the proof of purchase and a driver's license. The next day, my manager gave the receipt to me and I immediately faxed it to vanilla mastercard. I was told to follow after 2 hours to check if they received it. They even gave me a dispute number to quote everytime I will call them. After 2 hours, I called them back and was told that the copy of my driver's license was too dark for them to see. So I ask for an e-mail address where I can send it over. So I e-mailed them a colored copy of my driver's license. I receive an auto reply stating " This is an automated response. Please do not reply to this email. Thank you for contacting card services. We have received your correspondence. Please allow 3-5 business days for review and resolution". I thought everything is going well. When I tried to follow up 11 days after, I was told that my e-mail was not received! I told them it is impossible that my e-mail did not go through because I received an auto reply from them! I got the same reason, there is something wrong with their e-mail system. How did it become my fault that there is something wrong with their e-mail and I have to suffer? So again, I patiently e-mailed them my driver's license and this time I requested that they call me to at least inform me that they receive it. I don't want them to put me on hold for a long time and waste my time for nothing. Who knows they will tell the same thing that they did not receive it! Until now, 5 days after I resent a copy of my driver's license by fax and e-mail, I did not receive any call from them! Good luck to me if ever I am going to get my $200 back!
Never ever buy this credit card (Vanilla Mastercard) . I purchased a $100 card last week. When I was trying to use it I found out it was not working . I contacted Mastercard and I was told the card did not get activated at the time of purchase. The company received all the info from me including : Name, Home Address, Card Number, and of course a lot more information from my receipt ( spent 40 minutes on the call) . I was later told that I need to wait for 3-5 buisiness days so that they could investigate it. After 5 days, I called them back again inquiring about the status of my card . Guess what, I was told again that the investigation might take a couple of more days.
So right now I am not sure how long I need to wait before this card gets activated if it ever gets activated.
Got a $50 gift card as a birthday present by my wife's parents. Went to use it 3 months later and it shows it's not been activated. Called "customer service" and was told I have to provide:
1. A copy of the original receipt.
2. A copy of the front and back
3. Send a separate email for each attachment
4. Call to verify they recieved the attachment
Seriously! That's not even worth $50.
SCAM, stay away.

Vanilla Visa is a perfect rip-off! I received 2 $100.00 gift cards

card expired and the second was only good for $25.00.

I've got 7 dollars left on my account and i couldnt buy a 6 dollar item. I go home and check my balance, and it says they cant find my card. Im guessing vanilla visa does this for everyone and that is how they manage to keep their company afloat.

I have received a Vanilla Visa Gift Card twice. About 6 months ago for my birthday, and just recently for Christmas. Both times there was trouble using the money on the card. This card is a gift of frustration. Whoever you give it to will have to jump through hoops and end up no where! Eff Vanilla Visa!

Ok so there is no scam from visa on this one what is going on is there is a small ring of thieves going around stealing the cards and replace them with other cards that were not meant for that package and some how sealing them back up and waiting for the package to be scanned and then the cards being activated and the money being stolen off of these cards. I know this cause it happened to me personally.
Rip off
What a rip off i received one of these cards and it got misplaced in a drawer when i went to use it the $50 balance was gone so i called customer service (what a joke they are no service) they said the balance had been used up by fee's so i complained they sent me a replacement but not for $50 only $24 i received it on 12/9 and acitivated it on 12/10 was assesed a fee for not using it of $2.50 and when i tried to use it it was declined 6 times. This is a huge rip off they have your money and are earning interest on it the card should never expire, if i took a customers money and gave them nothing but hassel for it like VISA i would go to jail. Tell everyone you know to avoid these cards and please write to your Senators and Congressmen practices like this should be illegal.

can't use the card/declined
On June 11/09 I bought a Vanilla Visa gift card as a present to my sister, she tried to use it on 3 different places and they told her that the card was declined. I called the number on the back of the card and they said that it wasn't activated properly that I needed to go to the store where I got the card (Dollar General/Asheville/Patton Ave.) until 3 attempts to have somebody to help me the Assistant Manager called vanilla visa from there and they gave her some instructions but at the end she told me that I had to come back when the Gral. Mngr. get to the store that he would help me.
I went the following day and he did the same thing, called Vanilla Visa again and told him to read the card number and then the number on the outside of the card cover and they told him that the numbers did'nt match and he resumed that he couldn't do anything because the numbers didn't match, implying that I have changed the original card from the card cover.
How did I know that the numbers matched when I bought the card if I didn't opened it when I bought it, this was a gift card that you give away the way you buy it. Until this day I cannot use the card.
I feel helpless, like if they just STOLE my money and didn't even want to investigate how this mistake was done.

I purchased a 35$ vanilla visa and payed the 5$ activation fee, which is a joke. I read the information that came with it and realized I should register it online before trying to make an online purchase. I registered it online, and tried to make a purchase, only to find that it was declined! I tried to purchase again assuming I had typed a number in wrong, and it was declined again! I checked my accound balence to find that I had 7.85 cents left... what?! Turns out that the two transactions were "pending" and the money was in electronic limbo, neither spent, nor available. I contacted the store I was purchasing from, and they only showed one attempt and were not able to collect funds, because they weren't there. He contacted visa and they said there was nothing they could do, I contacted visa CS and got the same response. The merchant I was purchasing from was only able to cancel the order. The visa CS said I would have to wait a week to get my money back and that the entire process was automated by a program and that they could not do anything about it! Although, my money was refunded, I'm upset that I had to wait a week just to get my money back and for the card to realize it was registered for me to make a purchase.
I bought a $25 vanilla gift card to be able to bet it online. It is now being declined so I decided to call the company and speak with a representative about the issue. I have been on hold for 40 minutes waiting on "the next available representative". So my only assumption is that either nobody wants to work for them or there are way too many issues that need to be resolved.. unbelievable

vanilla master card
I received a Vanilla Mastercard as a gift and it was DECLINED every time I tried to use it. I did not want to embarass the gift giver so I put it away and tried again later. Seems like many places will not redeem it! When I logged onto the site they show they are deducting a "service fee" for NOT USING THE CARD. When I called - you guessed it - ETERNAL HOLD.
Turns out the company TAKES AWAY your card value month by month in "service fees." WTF? They get $50 for the card, they get to work with or invest that cash and then they take away a monthly fee for - what? - storage in my wallet?
I think Vanilla Master Card is a SCAM.

VANILLA GIFT CARDS ARE A RIP OFF! TRUST ME ON THIS! NEVER GIVE THESE AS A GIFT!THEY DO NOT WORK LIKE MAJORITY OF THE GIFT CARDS!BY THE TIME THEY "FEE YOU TO DEATH" YOUR CARD HAS NO VALUE. THAT IS, IF IT ISN'T REJECTED AT THE ESTABLISHMENT YOU TRY TO USE IT AT!AND...CAUSING EMBARRASSMENT TOO!
I just got two 50 dollar cards as gifts. Sealed in package that appears to be intact.
I opened one, only to find out that it had been used in California in 2009 for all kinds of different purchases. The card and also the one that is unopened, are both used and have no value. They somehow repackaged them or made duplicates with the same numbers.
Where do I make an official complaint for fraud?
I my card expired the same month i got it for my little sister and now i can't get hold of any one real person form "Vanilla" to help me fix this. It feels like a really big SCAM!
If you were smart you would have read the terms and conditions printed on the card's packaging before buying it. By buying it you agree to the terms and conditions which includes activation fee and monthly fee.
