NorthStar Alarm Services contract/customer service

I am completely disgusted with this company and their "customer service"! Two years ago my parents, who are in their eighty's were visited by two sales men who misrepresented the products and services that my parents should be receiving. Yesterday their alarm was triggered for the first time in two years, and NO ONE called their home to see if everything was all right. I called today to make a complaint and find out the procedure for canceling. I asked why no one had called to confirm that my parents were okay and I was told that there was no record of the alarm going off. I informed the customer service representative that my father had been calling the company all day long and got put on hold. Once again, the representative said that they did not receive a call and then later said that they had spoken with my father but did not help him to figure out how to shut the alarm off. I was also made aware of the fact that this company condones their representatives becoming verbal abusive when speaking to customers. I would like to say only one more thing: if this company ever pays you a visit; please close the door to them and their products.

NorthStar Alarm Systems charged for services not rendered. The Alarm System cannot work without a telephone line. I called to explain that the phone system had been disconnected because the property was vacant. They continued to bill because they said they received no notice of cancellation. I sent NorthStar an official notice of cancellation via regular...

NorthStar Alarm Services terrible experience

We signed a contract with these guys in June of 2003 when a salesman came by our home. It seemed like a decent deal- service charges of $50/month for 3 years in return for a security system and service for those months. We soon found that the service was a ripoff, as we didn't receive anything from it even when the alarm went off. That being said- we called in July of 2006 to see when we could cancel and what the termination fee would be. There was a stiff penalty involved (I can't remember how much), so we agreed verbally on the phone to have the service through our termination date of June 2007.

1st part of the scam: Fast forward to June 2007. My wife calls Northstar and tells them that we would now like to terminate our contract. They tell us that we can't cancel over the phone. We must write a written request to cancel the service. This is the first part of the scam- make the customer physically write a letter, and hope that the customer doesn't get in the cancellation request on time.

2nd part of the scam: When we talked to Northstar on the phone, the representatives NEVER mentioned that our written cancellation request had to be made 60 days prior to the cancellation date. So we wrote the cancellation notice and sent it in. I then received a letter back saying that they couldn't cancel the service in June 2007 because of this issue.

3rd part of the scam: The letter I received also stated that since they did not receive my cancellation notice in time, that my contract would be extended until June 2008!

Somehow they got a full extra year out of this contract. Do I have the time to fight it? No. It is not worth the money. I did tell them repeatedly over the phone that the extra $600 they made from me would sacrifice their business and reputation in my town and neighborhood, and I will spend the rest of my life destroying their reputation whenever the 'home security' subject comes up.

Northstar uses the absolute dirtiest tactics I've ever seen. Today I learned that my contract ended in May and that they automatically extended the contract by 18 months. Turns out that they don't send a notuce when your contract is ready to expire and giclve you the option to extend or cancel service and to top it of...you are supposed to send in a written letter to cancel 60 days prior in order to cancel...otherwise they automatically extend it for the 18 months...how is this legal...at best it's dirty and deceptive and downright disgusting. I will almost bet that nobody will ever remember when they read a lengthy contract 36 months prior and saw the small print...how much you want to make a bet that they don't ever receive your written request to cancel if you even remembered to mark your calendar. I paid this company faithfully for over 3 years and now in order to cancel I need to pay over $1300 to pay off the new extended term that I did not authorize. I will never do business with this hirrible company again and HIGHLY recomend that you do not either otherwise you WILL ultimately find yourself in this predicament. The sad part is that I was in the middlen of selling my home and moving my family during May and part of June so there was way too much stressful things to deal with...so despite not even living at the address I supposedly must pay this...a hard lesson to say the least...I've never experienced anything like this before.

Please Beware - Unethical and Devious Practices
My first security company was Vivent Though I had no problem with that company, I was persuaded by salespersons from Vision Security to switch to their company and receive lower rates. They even paid out my contract with Vivent. I signed a 60-month contract with Vision in 2012. Some time later, I received an undated letter from Northstar informing they had taken over my contract.
In July, 2016, technicians from Northstar arrived at my home unannounced to update my equipment. At completion of service, I was given what I thought was a two-page Schedule of Equipment and Services which I signed.
When I called to terminate the service on 1/18/2021, I was informed that I had signed a Supplemental Alarm Agreement extending my contract another 60 months. It turned out that tucked behind the Schedule of Equipment and Services was the form to extend my contract, which I had unwittingly signed.
I was informed I would have to pay and early termination fee of $795.45 in order to cancel the service. This sum covered 6 months remaining on the current contract in addition to the months remaining on the first contract. I was informed by the contract manager that if this amount was not paid, the debt would be sent to collections and that my credit rating would be impacted.

No service for over a month.
Called Cust Serv several times a day, always told the technicians will call me in a few hour or by the end of the day.

Called NorthStar Repair scheduling service several times and left message and no one has returned my call or Cust Serv calls to them.

This is ridiculous.

this is typical of the problems that I have encountered with these rip-off artists I do intend to go further what kind of reputable company refuses a request for a corporate telephone number and will not tell you (the customer) the name or extension of a corporate supervisor? this is pure scam the state BBB will be notified, and the consumer protection agency

I have had my alarm go off in the middle of the night twice in 3 months. Their attitude is that since I am past the 90 day install warranty that they will charge me a $35.00 fee to look at it. The agent on the phone was so helpful. I hope that if I send my cancellation now (a year ahead of tie) that They can't automatically extend my contract. I'll send the letter registered. I should have been a little worried when It took them over 90 days to actually get the contract right. DO NOT SIGN WITH NORTHSTAR.

My 76 and 86 year old grandparents just got talked into some sort of agreement yesterday with Northstar. I came by right in the middle of their meeting and was very confused by what was going on. They have had ADT since I was an infant and I am now 25 and they aren't known for just up and changing things like this. Now one day later I am reading all this crap. Can my grandfather stop payment on his check he wrote them? What should they do?

I just experienced the same situation. I signed agreements for two properties, May 1 and May 6, 2009. I emailed my cancellation notice March 8, 2014. Guess what? That was 8 and 5 days less than the required 60 day notice. So I was auto-renewed through November
1 and 5 respectively. Isn't that something? I'm going around my neighborhood to share my experience with other North Star customers. If I can save one from a similar situation, then at least I have that satisfaction. It is frustrating, but it is clearly in the contract. I think we all assume a 30 day termination notice. But this is a fundamentally deceptive practice

We have a contract with Northstar apparently for 60 months, when we where told that it was for a 36 month term ny the representative that came out to our home. Now we are moving to a new home and are required to take NS with us because our term isnt over for another 39 months and to terminated early it will be 2200.00. Im sorry I just dont think that is fair. The guy on the phone Blake sounded like he was eating while reading me their very scripted speech...I wonder if maybe taking this case to our attorney would even be worth it.

I'm glad I came across this board. It did not save me from signing a contract with Northstar Alarm Services as I've had one with them for 4 years but hopefully it will prevent others from making the same mistake I /we did.

I too tried to cancel my contract early and they actually don't have an opt out early fee. To cancel early, you have to pay the remaining amount on the contract and you still have to deal with writing a letter to cancel.

I typed up my letter today, 9 months early, to make sure they don't get me for any more time than I've already foolishly agreed to. I'll also be filing a complaint to the BBB but it sounds like that won't do much good (makes you wonder why the BBB has any credibility).

Avoid Northstar Alarm Services as they are just running a racket...

I agree as well...DO NOT SIGN A CONTRACT WITH THEM. I have serveral neighbors that had/are having the exact same problem and ALL of us have had to extend the contract. Not to mention that I have faxed the letter a bazillion times, emailed their billing department several times and I cannot get a response. I was trying to do it all via email, so I would have record and proof that I sent the cancellation in, but OF COURSE they will not respond. I'm sorry, but they should send out a notice 3-5 months prior to the expiration date so people have a chance to make the choice and not just scam them into it. They are one of the worst companies I have ever done business with. Not to meniton when they installed the system the keypad in our bedroom did not work after the tech left. We called and they wanted to charge an arm and a leg to come out and fix it - they installed it the day before! Then we had started with the cell phone service, because we didn't have a home phone and he told us we could switch if we ever got one and it would save us $20 a month. We ended up getting a home phone and when we called to have it switched, again, they told us it would cost a lot of money (don't remember the exact amount) to have it switched. We were NEVER told any of this when we signed up. They are a huge scam and rip off!

NorthStar Alarm Services contract cancelling

Please do not sign a contract with this company. I was told I could cancel before June 6 of 2009 (which is also on my contract)as they wanted to promote there services because we were in a new subdivison and my home was on a corner lot. Well when I called in after I was charged unauthorized charges to my account to cancel the service I was told the salesman made a mistake and I had to cancel 3 days after services so I could not cancel and they would file a collection on me if I did not continue to pay them. I am very upset with this company not only that I can not cancel but there service along with customer service is horrible. I am now having to get a attorney involved as I do not want the service and by my contract I have the right to do so.

They still continue to charge me services even after I have called to cancel. My last conversation with them is if they do not come and pick up there equipment the contract states I can dispose of at my free will.

I will keep you all posted of the outcome.

All the reviews about NSH are too familiar with what am going through and still in disbelief that they automatically rolled me over sixty months new contract they called "upgrade" even after a certified letter of cancellation request, I send. Question? had anyone ever has been able to dispute and win a case?

My only option is to cancel payment through my bank and take chance my credit gets damage. Thank you

Man these complaints sound so familiar. I knew that mine was a 5 year contract. I never had a problem with the service in the 4 years I had them. But we sold the house 9/20 and I was told I could transfer the devices but unfortunately I did not need them in the new house that we built. I called NorthStar and informed them that I was selling the house and they told me my contract was up in 7/21 and that I had to pay until then and they would not not be letting me out of the contract. I was fine with it because I signed the 5 yr contract. July comes around and I call and cancel and thinking everything is good and in September it comes off my credit card again. I call and now someone tells me I need to send in a letter to cancel it which no one ever said before. So I send in a letter hoping to get a refund but October comes and I get charged again. Wow. So I called again 11/4 when I noticed credit card getting hit and they say I’m automatically renewed into a 6 month contract. I had to send a letter in 60 days before the contract was up. Is this even legal to automatically renewed into a long term contract. So now I have to pay till January 22. I’ve talked to three different people who have said three different things. If you are reading this DO NOT GET MIXED UP WITH THIS COMPANY. They are very deceptive and basically rob you.

North Star is pure evil.
They told me that death was the only way out for a dementia suffering parent that they snuck in the door and resigned before I could cancel per agreement.

And even in death, I'm still still fighting their evil ways.

May they all rot in hell.

I was told at the time of signing the contract that it was a 2 year contract. Nothing in the paperwork the salesman left talked about the length of contract. However, the paperwork the tech left behind did state it was a 5 year contract. I tried to cancel 4 months into the contract and was told I'd have to pay well over $2k to end contract. That is when I found out it was a 5 year contract which I went back and looked at the paperwork from when I signed and the info the salesman left mentioned nothing about length of contract, but the paperwork the tech left behind did state 5 years, as I already stated. So, the salesman (I won't mention his name) lied to me about the length of contract. Plus, and this is my bad, but I allowed him to pitch me even though my door has a "No Solicitation" sign on it. He just caught me at a time where I was distracted with my son. I had bought the home a month prior and the neighborhood isn't the greatest. The "No Solicitation" sign was on the door when I bought the home, however, I had never had a "No Solicitation" sign on any prior dwellings. I left it on the door because I don't want solicitations, however, not used to having one, forgot it was there when I answered the door for the salesman. I already agreed it was my bad for allowing him to pitch me and play on my ignorance, however, it took him ignoring a posted sign to even knock on my door. I really wish I had just told him good luck. Now, I am stuck with a 5 year contract instead of what I was told/sold was to be a 2 year contract.
I will tell people to be very cautious in doing business with this company.

This happened to me as well! I called to cancel and they said it was a 5 year contract. What?! I would never sign a 5 year contract. I tried to cancel multiple times, mind you we have sold the home and haven’t lived there in 6 months now. They will not cancel it for us saying we still have two years remaining on the contract. Can anyone help? I stupidly signed a contract with this company and now feel awful for putting my family through this. I signed the contract on a Thursday and if we installed on Friday. The door camera stopped working on Sunday! Today (Tuesday) we were woken up by the alarm going off. We turned it off and then the panel proceeded to yell “front door tampered”. I was transferred to the tech help from the representative that responded to the alarm. No one answered. I finally pressed the button for a call back, and they did at 1:30 in the morning … 2 hours later. I want out! Is there a grace period? I don’t even have the contract-just a couple of pages from it.

NorthStar Alarm Company based in Utah- Is a prejudice, discriminate against black people, I have never been treated this badly by a company, stay away please! This is a horrible company to do business with, this country is going through hell right now  to fight prejudice and bigotry, this company is embracing it by defrauding an older black woman, I know if I was white I wouldn't be treated this way. How can you people sleep at night knowing you people trained your sales people to be shady and deceitful and especially rip off vulnerable black woman. I went through the internet, google your company found out I was not the first one your company was deceitful to. This is wrong, where is your conscience, where is your integrity, I understand you have a business to run, you don't have to  rip off old black women to get rich, God will judge your company.

On June 11, 2017 Aaron Wagstaff and his crew was in my neighborhood, selling Alarm Service, I invited him into my home, heard the presentation, I like what I was told about the company, he ran my credit told me he could offer this service only if I had A1 credit. I was told I can sign up for 12 months, I need to call prior to 12 months or the contract would be renewed automatically. I did as I was advised by the sales person (Aaron Wagstaff  [protected] that's his phone number). When I informed the customer service rep I want to discontinue my service with the company, because I was not pleased with the service I am receiving, I was told  I had to pay$4200.00 to get out of the contract, because I signed the contract for 42 months, I do remember signing the electronic contract, I trusted Aaron, he told me the documents I was signing electronically is the same as the paper ones I signed. I believed him, because I was looking at the documents I signed.
I had no reason not to believe the sales person, I was shocked, upset to learn I was duped into signing contract for an alarm company for 42 months. Who does that, this is unethethical, not good business practice, and This Company should be upfront and transparent.

Worst security system I have ever had. I am elderly and they pushed fast talked - it was hard to keep everything straight. The alarm has been in for over a year and never has properly worked. Have to wave your hand back and forth in front of the motion sensor to get it to set. The garage door opener fobs maybe worked every 10 times of trying. When we did get an alarm it took from 1-3 days to be notified via phone. Now my garage door opener was really acting up and I called someone out and they advised that the alarm techs had messed up the wiring and I had to replace the garage door opener. Got nervous and had the electrician check Northstar wiring and was told that it is messed up. I will not allow one of their techs back into my home. Now I am going to have to battle them to cancel the "Agreement". I was told that this was an Agreement...not a Contract and that after 1 year it could be cancelled. Doubt that will happen. I have sent letters to Northstar and to the Utah Attorney General. I am unemployed and on a fixed income...shame on Northstar for the way that they are treating people.

March 2015 I guess the lies fly from city to city. My salesman Chad, in Houston claims to be an owner as well as a great personal friend of Donald Trump. No that's where I should have read thru the BS and laughed this guy out of my house. He did 3 different places for us and we have had at least 12 different false alarms 2 of which no one...that's right no one called on their box or our cell phone. Along with that they were to install cameras and after 3 months begged out of the install promising a $900 refund. Now I'm told they never charged the cameras to us and if you look back at our "contract" in hand writing by a kindergarten child, you cant make heads or tales of what we were supposed to get Contract or no contract I don't need credit and will not be bullied. I'm not paying. And for those saying read the contract, I ask you to find the part that says we are still bound to pay service to a company that gets signature up front and then does not deliver or refund and on top of that gives us a system that just goes off at leisure. We have no confidence in this system that should make us feel safe We also are will be bringing an attorney into this mess
